Malta Outdoor Recreation and Camping Association
The Messenger of Peace programme encourages Scouts to identify and learn about challenges faced in local communities and encourages Scouts to become active citizens by implementing solutions
This project all started after controversial news articles published regarding the handing over of Mizieb and l-Ahrax to hunters on the 22nd of April 2020.
As a Scout, and as an active citizen, I was completely against the closing of a major part of Malta’s woodland and outdoor recreation hotspot.
I formed part of the founding committee for the Outdoor Recreation and Camping Association here in Malta alongside a couple of fellow scouts
Our main aims are to safeguard sustainable outdoor recreation, to ensure accessibility of all public spaces, to promote education of sustainable practices in outdoor recreational activities and to ensure that outdoor activities have appropriate enforcement and legislation.
The Outdoor Recreation and Camping Association became a platform to work towards common goals in safeguarding sustainable outdoor recreation, ensuring accessibility of all public spaces, promoting education of sustainable practices in outdoor recreational activities and ensuring that outdoor activities have appropriate enforcement and legislation.
I truly feel that in the short time our association has existed, we have been able to make a large impact on the local outdoor recreation community.
Thanks to the inspiration of the Messenger of Peace programme, I was able to undergo a project which allowed me to combat an issue faced by the local outdoor recreation community and enabled me to become more of an active citizen.
I learned the importance of making yourself heard and standing up for your rights and the rights of others. I learned that with a big enough voice you can make change.
