Lombok Turtle Rescue
The Lombok Turtle rescue was a trip to an island called Gili Meno, in Indonesia. On this island is the Bolong Turtle Sanctuary, run by a man named Bolong, who rescues turtle eggs from nests before the villagers get to them. He raises the turtles until they are about a year old, then releases them into the sea. Scouts WA took about 50 Scouts, Venturers, and Leaders over to Gili Meno to support Bolong with his sanctuary for a week, and I was one of the lucky Scouts to go on this awesome project. The Scouts helped clean out the turtle tanks in which the turtle live, do beach and reef clean-ups, and turtle patrols at night to see if we could find a turtle nest with eggs in it. A lot of the Scouts did lots of fundraising for the sanctuary, and we were able to buy Bolong an outboard motor - because his had previously broken, a freezer to store fish in so it wouldn't go off, and donated money in general. The Scouts and leaders were all also trained in Leave No Trace, so we could take back to our groups the knowledge of LNT, and all the youth earned their World Scout Environment badges too. The trip proved to be so popular and effective that the trip was run again in 2015.
