Litter Less project by 1st Peter Place

On the 11th of March, the Meerkats&Cubs met to help clean up the river bed by our hall. We had had a lot of rain&as the river subsided there was a lot of litter left on the banks of the river. On the other side of the river is a lovely park where people get together to hold markets. We went across on a Saturday to clear the river for the park&market so that their environment remains clean&beautiful. This was also a lovely opportunity for people at the market to view meerkats&cubs in action
The project was on the river bank by our scout hall. Two Scouts joined us to build a bridge across the river that the meerkats and cubs could cross over. Armed with gloves and big bags the meerkats and cubs picked up litter that was left on the river bank after heavy rain. It was on a Sat morning after the meerkat programme.
The park and market benefited from our clean up as they back onto the river. This was a lovely opportunity to tidy up the space for them to leave it looking beautiful and clean, and a great opportunity for people to see meerkats and cubs in action
The meerkats and cubs where amazed and horrified at the amount of litter left after the river had subsided. They learnt about the safe disposal of medicines as we found a lot of medicine bottles laying on the river bank. They learnt about what is recyclable and what is not as we found a lot of polystyrene on the river bank. They also got to see how litter can make our space look dirty and not attractive to be in.
