Litter Less Campaign by 1st Amanzimtoi Scouts

1st Amanzimtoti Meerkats, Cubs and Scouts has joined together for the Litter Less Badge Campaign and got together at Twini Beach in Amanzimtoti to do a beach clean up. Twini Beach is one of the worst beaches in the area with literally everything coming down the river and washing up on the beach. Anything you can think off washes up on Twini Beach and is such an eye sore. We have spent a total of 3 hours from 8am to 11am on the beach and cleaned up approximately 50 black bags of rubbish.
Project was executed at Twini Beach at Amanzimtoti Country Club Golf Course. Meerkat, Cubs and Scouts all joined in together with loads of parents to clean this beach up. Even though we had approx. 50 bags plus, the amount of rubbish that washes up does not justify the clean up with the amount that washed up continuously.
We had 10 meerkats, 30 cubs and 20 scouts. We had most parents that also assisted. Our project of clean up has not just assisted the community to enjoy the beach but also leaves it with not such an eye sore. Mostly we have impacted the animal and sea life. We have removed so much polystyrene and fishing line gut and plastic. This is a major risk for our sea and land animals.
Our Pack assistant leader has taken all the kids down to the river and has explained to them in detail how all this various household rubbish washes up on the beaches. He has explained that if we do not trash our rubbish correctly it gets dumped in the rivers, or the wind takes it or it comes down the drains, etc. I think with the knowledge the scouts know how important it is to dispose of rubbish in the correct way.
