Leadership Development and Environmental Awareness Camp of Veles
Scout group Dimitar Vlahov is the oldest scout organization in Macedonia and is recognized by the World Organization of the Scout Movement as being a legitimate scout organization. For 60 years, countless young men and women have been a part of Dimitar Vlahov in Veles, Macedonia. Scout group Dimitar Vlahov has a reputation in Veles and throughout Macedonia as being a great influence on the lives of young men and women. The push for an ‘environmentally friendly’ Macedonia is only 10-15 years old. There still is much to teach today’s youth about environmentalism. Therefore, raising environmentally conscience youth is an important step in improving the quality of life in Veles. With the realization of this project, Scout group Dimitar Vlahov enabled to hold its 2013 camp and camps in future years. These camps help youth of Veles improve their leadership skills, such as communication and teamwork immeasurably and increase their environmental awareness. The following activities were implemented in the project period: Activity 1: The Scout Group Dimitar Vlahov was training participants weekly from February through June on vital skills such as first aid, emergency response, proper understanding and appreciation of environmental conservation, and survival skills. These weekly trainings were realized in the scout house in Golozinci, Macedonia, a village approximately 20 kilometers southwest of Veles. All trainings were led and supervised by the scout master, as well as experienced assistants. During these trainings, 80 young people gained new skills. Activity 2: 100 participants (age 14-20) participated on a week-long camp route - excursion, where they had a chance to test their skills gained during the training weekends. The participants were in an isolated area and were depending on each other as well as the scout masters. The excursion was a great opportunity to demonstrate the aforementioned skills they learn. Activity 3: At the conclusion of the excursion, the participants earned badges related to the skills they demonstrated. The objective that was previously set (at least 80% of the participating campers to earn badges by concretely demonstrating skills) was completely achieved. The scout master of Dimitar Vlahov awarded the badges. Results of the project Implementation of the project activites genrated the following results: 1. 70 out of 100 participants (70%) have successfully obtained badges demonstrating new skills developed. 2. All participants obtained greater self-confidence and leadership and communication skills 3. Participants gained clear understanding of environmental issues and the value of conservation of nature.
