Laudato Si' Planting Day Hospitality

The Laudato Si' committee and volunteers were planting a garden that will impact an entire school and church community, but it was going to be a hot day and they would need shade, cold water, and a place to rest so no one was overheated. It also gave the opportunity to help plant the garden.
The project was done next to a small garden being planted on a church and school grounds. All the parents and school children will pass it every day during the school year. It was a hot day with no shelter from the heat and sun. We provided a shade tent, cold water, fresh fruits, places to sit and rest, and extra tools for the gardeners.
Directly, about 25 people benefited from the project. We were told our shade and rest area were "a life saver" from the heat and sun. The gardeners were exhausted and took many breaks to refresh and cool down. Indirectly, hundreds of people will benefit from the beautiful garden, full of native Illinois plants. We helped make that possible by caring for those who planted the garden.
It was beautiful to see how different people from the church and school community came together to create the garden and provide for different needs of the garden project. The main group welcomed our Cub Scout group, were grateful for our hospitality, and included us in their project. I wish we could have more scouts participate. The entire pack was invited but the garden project we were supporting was at a time most scouts were unavailable.
