Lantana Primary building readers for life

The Scouting-in-Schools team at Lantana Primary wanted to teach learners practical literacy skills while fostering creativity and independence. Caitlin Plaatjies explained that the project helped children learn to search for information, ask for help, and express ideas through storytelling. By combining guidance with interactive exercises, the initiative aimed to enhance imagination, problem-solving, and confidence while making literacy engaging and meaningful.
Learners practiced writing and sharing their own stories, explored word meanings, and engaged in dictionary use. Yeboneers guided children through activities that encouraged creativity and practical learning. Challenges included coordinating library card registration with parents and managing learners’ time. After-school programs helped complete remaining activities, ensuring that all learners benefited from the literacy adventure.
Caitlin Plaatjies observed that group activities worked better than individual tasks for time management and engagement. Learners developed new skills in writing, creativity, and research. The project showed that planning, flexibility, and structured support are essential to ensure learners gain maximum benefit, highlighting the value of combining practical guidance with creative literacy exercises.
