Kudla Kiwempilo

In May 2012 two Scouters from Mpumalanga Sally and Chantal started a Scouting Group named 1st ChoChoCho at the Children in Distress Home (CID), an organization that looks after 459 orphaned and vulnerable children and their 242 Care Givers who are in distress due to poverty. In early March till May 2013, 1st ChoChoCho Scout Group started a project named Kudla Kiwempilo, meaning Healthy Food. The project was led by Scouter Sally Makofane. On the 27th of March Scouts planted a vegetable garden. They started by identifying the right place, defined the size of the garden and prepared the soil in order to plant seedlings. They planted vegetables such as lettuce, onions, spinach and beetroot. The Group took care of the plants by watering them properly and protecting the plants from chicken and other animals until they were ready to harvest. Scouts had fun by putting up and running the vegetable garden, they also learned about responsibility and teamwork. At the beginning of May the Scouts harvested their first vegetables. The harvest was used to enrich the food for the children coming to CID. The vegetable garden is now used by the Day-Care-Centre. This is what one of the Scouts had to say about participating in this project “After the project I made a vegetable garden at home, together with my siblings I planted lettuce, spinach, beetroots and onions. “ The project went well, and this Group wants to make a vegetable garden at another Day-Care-Centre. The vegetable garden in ChoChoCho will now be used by Day-Care-Centre and they plan to plant different vegetables.
