Kretzenshoop Primary Literacy Adventure
The Scouting-in-Schools Team wanted to help learners at Kretzenshoop Primary strengthen their reading and language skills. Many children lacked confidence in reading aloud or understanding basic language concepts. Motivated by the goal “to help the children,” the team aimed to empower learners, improve literacy foundations, and foster excitement for reading and learning through practical, engaging activities.
Learners at Kretzenshoop Primary participated in hands-on literacy activities: registering for library cards, visiting the library to learn book classification, finding information, reading and writing short stories, explaining parts of speech, using dictionaries, and listing books they had read. Yeboneers guided the learners and helped them overcome challenges, particularly for those struggling with reading, building confidence and reinforcing key language skills in a supportive environment.
The project showed that education can change everything. Learners gained confidence and became more engaged in schoolwork. Activities like library visits, story-writing, and dictionary exercises made learning practical and enjoyable. Some Yeboneers also faced reading challenges, highlighting the importance of practice and support. Overall, practical literacy activities and guidance helped both learners and leaders grow.
