Kids Haven

Phoenix Rover Crew, East Rand district in Gauteng ran a project at Kids Haven house in Mckenzie Park, Benoni. Kids Haven is a local charity that fosters street children and provides support for them in the community. This project was led by Jenna Redelinghuys, it was due to start in February 2013, but there were change of plans, the initial proposal was to start a vegetable garden for Kids Haven home. This idea had to be put aside because of rodent infestation problem that the Home was facing at the time. A solution was sought to manage the rodent infestation problem and the promotion of owls and raptors were taking into consideration, because they have been proven method to reduce rodent populations without the use of poison. The Group then used their funding to purchase owl boxes, raptor perches and electronic rodent chaser these were installed at Kids Haven, children's home. This was done in order to reduce rodent infestation problems. The Group partnered with Tendai Remwa from Eco Solutions and they supported the Group by helping installed rodent reduction resources. The installation of owl boxes and raptor perches has two aims and one is to promote raptors in the area of Kids Haven to reduce rodent population, and to educate the inhabitants of Kids Haven about the benefits of raptors. Eco Solutions has extensive experience in education about these benefits and conducted a workshop with the residents. The education manager at kids Haven, Terrie Heatly, saw to it that the children check every morning to see whether owls have been visiting during the night, and regularly check the raptor perches during the day. The children have taken ownership of the project and have been educated about the benefits of raptors. The difficulties of implementing a project when plans need to change was a significant challenge and a learning curve for this Group. Finding a helpful and enthusiastic contractor made this project easier to implement. The Group’s future plans are to partner further with Kid's Haven to complete their vegetable garden once it becomes clear that the rodent situation has been solved.
