Keeping Waterways Clean (Marina Reservoir, Singapore) ~ Continuation
In a continued effort towards making Singapore a clean city (story can be found in "Keeping Waterways Clean"), i continue with this project by starting the year out on the Marina, with public groups and with the scouts. Starting as two separate groups (public event w 16 people for WWS / 11 scouts on monthly patrol), in total both groups collected 54kg of litter. Given that the scouts were dredging litter off the bottom, the amount is impressive. This further highlights that the issue may be deeper than previously thought: Litter in the waterways may be through "natural dispersion" by wind, the fact that litter sinks and embeds itself on the bottom of the reservoir adds a further dimension to the depth of the issue. The litter is unseen and sits there, slowly (very slowly) decomposing, polluting the water, causing death (see photo - floater).
Regular monthly patrols have been challenged by the need for some scouts to stand down for their exam preparations. The youth will not be able to assist as community facilitators through the year, much. But whenever we can, we will be there!
Public events with Waterways Watch Society (Singapore) have been active and busy, too busy for photographs. The litter is still there. While we do our part for the waterways, we recognise the need for public education, especially with the young, as their little voices help in bringing about change. [Number of events this year 15 and counting]
