Kampung Benuk Reading Project
The rover scouts of the 05th Kuching Scout Group involved in this project consists of students who are currently pursuing their tertiary education. Considering this, we have desired that every child be allowed to have the opportunity to cultivate a reading habit. This is because reading is important as it provides countless benefits. Readers are exposed to new things that could improve their understanding, creativity, or improving their language skills.
We have decided to have Kampung Benuk as our project site. This village has a kindergarten called Taska Bahasa Warisan Bidayuh Biatah Kampung Benuk. The kindergarten has no educational resources for teaching English. Therefore, we have decided to build a reading corner with English books provided in the kindergarten for 3 to 6 years old.
Besides building a reading corner, we also initiated a reading program for kindergarten students to learn to read English books. We managed to execute 8 reading lessons which helped the students to learn English and read out a few words.
The reading corner was built for the kindergarten and will be used for many intakes of students. The team also contributed 220 reading materials for the reading corner. We also created a storybook for their reading corner.
Besides, 33 students had joined our reading program and they are able to recall familiar words and pronounce them. The teachers are able to use the books to conduct reading lessons for many years to come.
It was a great experience throughout this long-term project. We have learned multiple ways to collect funds. The biggest learning was during the execution of the reading program. Everyone on our team has minor experience in teaching, and we are not familiar with teaching kids of age 3 - 6 years old. Their learning ability and attention focus are low. Hence, we tried to come up with different methods to attract their attention while teaching them, making it fun for them to learn to read.
