Istana Open House

Istana Open House

Each year, on special occasions such as festive seasons and national holidays, the Istana where the President lives would open its door to the public. The President's Challenge would be doing fund raising by selling beverages, Istana memorabilia and tickets to enter the State house itself where artifacts and collectible items would be on displayed. Scouts are deployed to the Istana to render their services in crowd control and also assisting the volunteers from President's challenge in their duties. This is not only done by scouts but also ventures, rovers and adult leaders. My Personal Reflection: "As I have completed 5 occasions as the Istana Hospitality Team, I learned that every occasion has its own experience and for each duty, we get to interact with new people and learn new things. My first duty was the State Room and during this first duty, I encountered a guest who insist on entering the State Building after it was close, using the excuse that she came from afar and that I should let her and her family in. I managed to calm her down and assisted her to the security people to explain to her that the building is close. I felt happy that and shaken by the experience but I will truly not forget it. My next duty was the main gate. There I learned the true meaning of empathy as I continuously assisted elderly and wheelchair bounded people in the line. It was a hot day and the line was very long as it was Chinese New Year. Helping them made me feel happy and proud as I managed to learn and also feel what empathy truly means. My last duty was assisting a leader as a 2OIC at the Tour guide booth. I get to learn so much about the history of the Istana and its surroundings while following the guide. I had to become the OIC as the leader was injured in a trip overseas and I had to oversee the manpower allocated to me. Besides making sure each tour group had at least a scout following them to assist, I also ensure their welfare by providing them drinks and reminding them to hydrate. I was allocated some junior scouts and they were rather afraid to do things. This taught me to show a good example and had them follow me in a tour and I showed them what I would do to assist the guide and soon I can see them slowly going out of their comfort zone."
