At the beginning of 2013, Gerakan Pramuka got an honour to organize a camp for Rovers and Rangers which is named the “International Scout Peace Camp 2013”. As a nation which live in diversity, Indonesia is a great place to host the International Scout Peace Camp (ISPC) held from March 25 to March 31, 2013, with around 500 members of the scouting movement from, 6 regions of the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM): Asia-Pacific, Inter-American, European, Arab, Africa and Eurasia. Day 1 – 25 March 2013 Cibubur National Campsite became the main camp as well as the focal point of this event, whose theme is no other than “Scouting Builds Peace”. At the first day, activities in the main camp of ISPC focused on participants’ registration and preparation for the opening ceremony of ISPC 2013. Day 2 – 26 March 2013 The next day, participants coming from around 30 countries with different cultural backgrounds were joining the opening ceremony. After the opening ceremony was done and ISPC 2013 had been officially opened, then participants and invited guests were entertained by performances of Indonesian customs named Reog Ponorogo. Participants and invited guests also played Indonesian traditional musical instrument made from bamboo, named Angklung. Togetherness, brotherhood and sense of belonging among participants as well as brothers builders from various countries started when they sang and dance together using the official event song of titled “Messengers of Peace” (lyrics was written by Kak Susi Yuliati, one of Gerakan Pramuka Leader as well as APR Sub-Committee Member). Participants, Scout Leaders and invited guests then continued visiting the exhibition booths in and global development village. Day by day, participants of ISPC 2013 performed various activities like Brotherhood Games as a media to develop the sense of togetherness and knowing each other. The spirit of togetherness and brotherhood among ISPC participants were also boosted through “Welcome Night” and “Cultural Performance” activities, because on the next day they should prepare to join one out of 3 sub-camps located in different areas. Day 3-5, 27-29 March 2013 Activities held at the sub-camps aimed to encourage participants to learn and implement 5 branches of knowledge: 1) Community Development, 2) Scouting Skills and Adventures, 3) The Environment, 4) Culture, and 5) Local products. During the sub-camps activities, ISPC participants directly interacted with local residents by living with local families or homestay for over three days. At Situ Babakan Sub-Camp located in the southern part of Jakarta, the Participants learned about traditional Betawi dance (Betawi is the name of the ethnic group which original Jakarta people belong to), traditional martial arts named “Silat Betawi”, traditional music of “Tanjidor”, also traditional custom for welcoming guests called “Palang Pintu”. They also learned how to cook traditional Betawi snack from egg and rice, which is locally called “Kerak Telor”. Other than that, participants learned how to make hand-made traditional giant puppet named Ondel-Ondel. They performed some adventure activities like rafting through Setu Babakan Lake and did social activities like renovating the mosque and set up garbage barrels around the area of Setu Babakan lake. At Sukaratu sub-camp, West Java participants learned about Sundanese traditional dance named “Jaipong”, Sundanese Traditional Martial Arts called “Mainpo”, Sundanese traditional food called “ngaliwet”, procedures of planting rice as well as plowing the ricefield. They did the sightseeing around the countryside and performed interactive games with local children. ISPC participants also performed the community development activity such as renovating public restroom. Participants also got the chance to visit one of the remaining megalithic site mountain at Gunung Padang (Padang Mountain), Cianjur. At “Kampung Domba” Sub-Camp located in Banten (part of West Java province) participants learned about Traditional dance, traditional martial arts, lamb breeding, farming, and trees planting. They also visited the field of carrots and taros at the top of “Batu Bedil” mountain. The social activity consists of lavatory renovation and the making of trash bins. Besides, participants also performed activities such as teaching kids and teaching basic information and communication technology (how to operate computers) for local elementary school students. Finished with all activities at the sub-camps for three days, participants of ISPC 2013 then returned to Cibubur National Campsite. Day 6 – 30 March 2013 Participants followed a Peace Forum initiated by Messenger of Peace. This aims to share the experience of learning and knowledge they gained while following activities in each sub camp. Recommendations were also compiled in this forum. A summary of it was then made as “Cibubur Peace Declaration”. Later on, participants followed the Global Development Program (GDV) workshop, which is also part of activities of ISPC 2013. The participants were talking about the development of the related 8 main topics divided into 3 zones of discussion namely: 1) climate change zone in which participants joined a seminar on green lifestyle, waste management, renewable energy and disaster management, 2) Youth and Population in which participants attended a seminar on the role of youth in creating the world peace and also a seminar on family and green urbanization, 3) The Health Zone where participants followed a seminar on the world’s most infectious diseases as well as a seminar on clean and healthy lifestyle. At dusk, participants followed another activity which is cultural performing arts learned while they were at the sub-camps. Day 7 – 31 March 2013 A series of activities was started with the International Solidarity Peace Festival and the Carnival aiming to strengthen the international solidarity and friendship through performing the culture of each participant’s countries as they come from different national backgrounds. The carnival took place at “Taman Mini Indonesia Indah” (The Miniature Park of Beautiful Indonesia) On this last day, participants followed the closing ceremony which also formally closed all activities of the International Scout Peace Camp 2013. In this closing ceremony, the Cibubur Peace Declaration was recited. This Peace Declaration consists of participants’ opinions, hopes, plans or programs that they would do for their environment back in their respective countries. They bring along the basic values of Scouting as the foundation of diversity to build peace together. Day 8 – 1 April 2013 (Last Day) The International Scout Peace Camp 2013 was over, so participants prepared to return to their homeland while bringing real-life experience regarding cultural diversity, knowledge on world development and joint resolution as the agreed concept of action to create a better world and to, as said by Lord Baden-Powell, “leave this world a little better than you found it”. Every Scout is a Messenger of Peace who prioritizes joint missions to learn how to manage the cultural diversity and different nationalities as a tool combine the unity strength for the sake of world peace. World peace is possible because we are Scouts, the Messengers of Peace!
