India Project (Troop 1992)

The inspiration for Troop 1992 was born of a desire by two old scouts (one American, the other, Australian) to fulfill Baden Powell’s challenge to all scouts to “Try and leave this world a little better than you found it…”  Our vision is to blend elements of several World Scouting programs (specifically “Ticket to Life”, “Scouts of the World”; and “Messengers of Peace”) as a focus for promoting peace and goodwill in the world.  Troop 1992 is comprised of disadvantaged children residing in a slum area connected with the iconic Gandhi Ashram in Ahmedabad, India.  The aim of this project is to provide a stimulating environment in which the young participants can learn a variety of new skills (per the “scouting method”) to enhance their life experiences.    In January 2013, 4 Australian Scouts (1 Leader and 3 Rovers) travelled to Ahmedabad to interact with the 30 young scouts of Troop 1992.  We spent the first 3 days getting to know the children and their families and flew kites during the Uttarayan Kite festival.  Over the next 3 days we delivered a series of fun skills-based workshops at the Manav Sadhna Community Centre focussing on First Aid, Environment, Construction, and Camp Cooking.  We then accompanied the scouts on a 5-hour bus trip to Mt Abu in Rajasthan where we enjoyed a 3-night action packed adventure camp. The young scouts of Troop 1992 were a joy to work with and we derived great satisfaction from their smiling faces and eager participation in every activity.  Our workshops were particularly well received and tremendous fun was had by all.  The trip to Mt Abu was a major highlight for children who had never left their homes before and the camp was an amazing experience for everyone concerned.   Witnessing the obvious benefits that these severely disadvantaged children are getting from the scouting program, and hearing positive feedback from parents commenting that their children are behaving more responsibly at home and performing better at school, only reaffirms our commitment to provide ongoing material supports to Troop 1992.   This entire project was financed by our fundraising $13,000 in Australia to cover program costs, and to provide essential scouting equipment for Troop 1992 as well as funds for the ongoing maintenance of their scouting program.
