Humanitarian Partnership to Assist Displaced Persons and Street Children in Chad

Beginning in November 2019, Transatlantic Council member Tenderfoot Scout Benjamin Ringquist of Boy Scout Troop 324 partnered with the Non-Government Organization "One Child, One Parent" to deliver humanitarian aid to street children and displaced persons in N'Djamena, Chad.  The street children included children that had been kidnapped and held for ransom, former child laborers for Boko Haram, and children separated from their families by the conflict around Lake Chad.  Benjamin Ringquist started in November 2019 with a small donation that was used to purchase mosquito netting, hygiene supplies, and food.  In December 2019 he expanded his mission to include partnering with Boy Scouts in N'Djamena through the resourcing, and assembling of medical, hygiene, job training, and literacy-related donations.  Benjamin sourced all these items through the US military community in Stuttgart, Germany, and in February 2020 his father, an Assistant Scout Master with Troop 324, delivered them.  The Chadian Boy Scouts received medical supplies for their pharmacy and their displaced persons outreach efforts, and Benjamin established a bridge between his troop and the N'Djamena headquarters.  This relationship will be expanded in 2020 to include additional USA Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops.

Benjamin Ringquist also responded to "One Child, One Parent" needs by providing eight bolts of cloth that became a variety of items including blankets for street children and cloth for micro-businesses.  He also provided solar-powered lights to provide street children with light for their school and light for sleeping areas to help scare off child predators.  His donation to "One Child, One Parent" also helped provide resources for the charity's school clinic, and the new English-language children's literacy pilot program.  Benjamin Ringquist intends to carry on his project into 2020 by helping with three challenges that have been identified at the greatest needs: hygiene kits for girls; malaria nets; and school materials for the school.  Benjamin also intends to speak to local schools about the threat that Boko Haram presents to children.
