House of Seaweed

Nowadays, there are some issues for the marine ecosystem because of the number of marine pollution and garbage. This may not directly affect people in the city, but for those who life in the coastal area, that is become their very serious issues.

One of the area in Jakarta, namely Kepulauan Seribu has so many potentials to be developed, especially marine resources which currently are rapidly growing in Kepulauan Seribu. It is seaweed, one of the sea plants which has so many benefits both for the environment and also for the society.

In this project, we have encouraged Kepulauan Seribu society for planting seaweed. This kind of sea plants can protect seashore of the island from the billow also reduce waste from the sea to the beach. Moreover, it can help another marine ecosystem to get a new living space under the seaweed, because of the cleanliness and abundance of food in that area.

Starting from November 6th, we have been researching the needs and current situation about the area that we are going to build one House of Seaweed. The main agenda was held at 3 until 6 December 2020. At the time we share this event with some stakeholder, the local government was very supportive and enthusiast. They offer some helps, such as giving a permit to build the House of Seaweed and communicate to another institution who might could help this event.

About 70 scouts and 29 non scout has joined at this event. We have taught them on how to process seaweed, from planting to harvesting. Not only that, we also carry out other environmental activities, such as cleaning the beach, creating information boards regarding the importance of disposing of garbage properly.

Finally, currently Scouts in the Kepulauan Seribu have a Seaweed Houses which are managed jointly with the local community, this can support the local economy, keep the waters on the island clean and of course be a positive sustainable program.
