Helping those in the cold as Canberra turns 100

It started in January as a normal meeting between the executive team of the Branch Venturer Council in ACT. From there grew the idea of a blanket ball to serve as the Venturer Scouts gift to Canberra and my Service project towards the Queen Scout award. From their we decided to hold it in winter where we could help out St Vincent de Paul, a charity devoted to helping those in need, especially those out on the streets on cold winter nights. A similar type of ball to help another charity has been done before but none for SVDP.  The Blanket Ball was held on August 2nd, 2013 in a socut hall in Canberra where Venturers from different groups attended. A formal dress code was put in place while the food provided was that of a soup kitchen like scenario.  Our efforts raised $750 in cash and 20+ blankets and food tins that are currently being put to good use. People on the streets now have blankets and are able to get grocery cards for Woolworths, supplied by SVDP, to buy food to survive. From this now, we are hoping to set up a program where Venturers can continue volunteering for this charity and gain an experience and some service our for their awards.
