Heidedal Primary improving reading skills
The Scouting-in-Schools Team aimed to help learners at Heidedal Primary improve reading skills and gain confidence in literacy. Many learners struggled with reading, and the Yeboneers wanted to create activities that would engage them while making learning enjoyable. Motivated by the goal “to improve their reading,” the team focused on hands-on experiences that encouraged participation, built understanding, and sparked interest in literature.
Learners participated in registering for library cards, visiting the library, exploring book classification, finding information, reading and writing short stories, learning parts of speech, and using dictionaries. Yeboneers guided learners, especially those struggling, helping them read aloud and practice confidently. The activities encouraged engagement, improved comprehension, and created a positive learning experience, supported by collaboration with the champion teacher.
The project showed that structured literacy activities help learners gain confidence and improve reading skills. Struggling learners benefited from guidance and hands-on practice, while Yeboneers observed that reading “brightens the brain” and can positively impact lives. Collaboration with teachers improved implementation. Overall, learners became more confident, and Scouts strengthened their leadership and teaching abilities while supporting literacy growth.
