Hazeldene Primary building readers for life

The Scouting-in-Schools team noticed that many learners lacked opportunities to grow reading and thinking skills in fun, engaging ways. Marchelle Jack explained that the project aimed to create a supportive environment where learning felt like an adventure, encouraging curiosity and participation. By making literacy interactive, the team wanted to help learners build confidence, enjoy reading, and develop critical thinking.
Learners participated in reading and writing short stories, exploring dictionaries, practising word meanings, and discussing ideas with peers. Activities were structured yet interactive, with Yeboneers guiding learners through exercises to improve comprehension, critical thinking, and teamwork. Short, focused sessions ensured learners remained engaged and built literacy skills in an enjoyable, supportive way.
Marchelle Jack found it rewarding to see learners challenge themselves and think critically. She noted that when children feel supported and excited about learning, they excel and participate actively. The project highlighted that even small, consistent efforts can have a significant impact on literacy, engagement, and confidence, and that learning can be enjoyable when presented in a fun, interactive way.
