Fruit trees for farmers

To bring youth closer to rural Bhutan, foster food security and support farmers, a million fruit tree plantation project was initiated across the country on 15th March, 2022. Around 200 volunteers trained in land development and 1,334 other volunteers were engaged in planting 439,804 temperate fruit trees during the first phase. I was very fortunate to receive an opportunity to be a part of the project and support the people in remote areas who depend on farming for living.
I was actively engaged in plantation in Gomdar gewog under Samdrupjongkhar district. The seedlings were given to farmers based on the availability of land and their interests. Then our team along with farmers planted the saplings. In order to monitor the care and growth of the saplings, each sapling was geo-coded using Smart App MoDA (Mobile Operational Data Acquisition). The fruit trees are expected to bear fruits within 3-4 years from the date of plantation.
Around 500 people in my community will benefit from this project. Through this project farmers will be self sufficient and ultimately there will be healthier and happier community.
I was not well aware of people’s lives in rural areas and their hardships; how fruits are planted and the kind of fruits that grow in certain places. So, the project helped me learn new knowledge.
