Food Bags: Scouting for Food - A Good Turn Daily
"Do a Good Turn Daily" - a fundamental part of Scouting's DNA. Scouts always participate in service projects and recite the Scout Promise every week, but those Good Turns are meant to happen every single day. 365 of Good Turns a year, that is a significant impact on society. When COVID-19 hit the world, it impacted many families in Malaysia. By running this project, we are able to gather the resources from the community and contribute back to the community.
The project is carried out throughout the whole state of Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia. A collection centre is set up in Seremban, which operates daily from 9 am to 3 pm. Donors are free to drop whichever goods they want to donate (in their capacity) at the collection point. Scouts help to sort the goods and pack the items into goodies bags. Every weekend, Scouts deliver the goodies bags to each district within the state, with the assistance of the District Commissioner to identify the needy family.
Throughout the whole project period of about 2 months, we have given out approximately 1000 food/groceries bags, which each is able to sustain a family of 4 to 5 members for a week or two. The food bags given to them help families with low to no income to sail through the tough time due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Starting this project locally, we have inspired other organizations to do similar campaigns in their locality.
Organizing the logistics and storage of the donation are quite challenging and I learn to sort them out in a balanced manner and also practise a first in first out method to avoid the groceries from turning bad and becoming waste.
