Flood & Hygiene Relief Project - National Jamboree
We were inspired to build on a prior service project, the 2023 Flood Bucket Challenge, and serve West Virginia communities in more way than one. Therefore, we also decided to build menstrual hygiene kits, because this was a need our partners expressly communicated needed to be filled. One kit impacts more than one person: it has the power to impact an entire family.
With funding from the Messengers of Peace Fund, we formed our team of 4 young adult leaders with an adult advisor in April. From there, our Logistics Lead ensured all materials were ordered from Walmart Business, most of which was provided at-cost, and we began planning the integration with Scouting America's National Jamboree and how Scouts would arrive at our station, learn about Messengers of Peace, and build either a flood-relief bucket or menstrual hygiene kit.
We grew our skills in communication, problem-solving, remaining calm under pressure, conflict resolution, and team development. Although we faced some supply chain issues, all 5,000 kits were built and delivered via our local partner. During our project, unpredictable flooding in West Virginia necessitated the direct deployment of 2,100 of our hygiene kits to families in need. By handling these timely pressures and working with our project partners, we very much grew as a team.
