First Malvern Adopt-A-Spot cleanup

The project was initially started in 2011 where we identified a river system that had been littered and overpopulated with alien vegetation. The first clean up took place and it was then realized that this would need to be an ongoing project. Since 2011 every month our scout group would be heavily involved with the removal of litter and alien vegetation. The residents of a riterement home are our neighbors and they enjoy our presence and encourage our community involvement.
The location is a few meters behind our scout hall. When I was a scout, myself and fellow scout decided to do the world scout environment badge and so we identified the river system as a poor kept area. We decided that our objectives should be to clear the litter and alien vegetation and plant indigenous trees in the area. After just the 2 of us getting involved we decided to involve the entire group
Since 2011 the project impacted an entire generation of cubs and scouts however the direct impact for this project would be around 50 scouts. The community that had been directly impacted would be the retirement home that resides along side the river and the indirect impact being those that have been made aware of the successes of the project via newspaper articles, and social media posts
We definitely have learned how easy it is to make an impact, be it big or small. We've learnt how to plan and organize events. We've learnt about alien invasive species and how to remove them. We've learnt about mini SASS assessments, water quality, food webs, erosion, pollution. Etc the project is still ongoing and we are still yet to learn more
