Fiji's 47 Years of Independence
Fiji Independence Day (also referred to as, the National Fiji Day) is celebrated annually on October 10. This day commemorates two special historical events in Fiji’s history:
In 1874 on this day, Fiji Chiefs ceded to Great Britain Many years later, in 1970 on this same day, Fiji became an Independent nation, and its colonial status was abrogated
The National Fiji Day is a great source of pride and happiness to all Fiji nationals. On this day the dark clouds of colonialism were swept away and Fiji became an independent nation.
The Independence Day in Fiji is celebrated with utmost enthusiasm, zeal, and fervor. The whole nation comes together to celebrate Fiji Day. It’s the time of the year when everyone puts politics aside and celebrate the things that bind them together as Fijians. There are cultural dances, special independence day seminars, festivals, parades, and sports competitions on this day.
For the first time the main celebration was held at Nadi’s Prince Charles Park with other celebrations held at the Vunidawa Primary School in Naitasiri, Nasau Park at Levuka and Waiyevo Grounds on Taveuni Island.
Nadi had a hive of activity and pomp with the Saint Thomas School band leading the schools’ march through the town to Prince Charles Park.
The Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama will be at the celebrations, the very first national Fiji Day celebration held in Nadi.
The President Major General (Rtd) Jioji Konrote accorded the presidential salute, with the trooping of the colour and 21-gun salute.
Nadi Primary School took part in this celebration as well on 10 October 2017.
