Environmental action: Swan-Canning Riverpark

To find out about problems facing our local environment, particularly around the Swan-Canning River, Perth, WA and to undertake environmental action to improve the area

(1) Night stalk with cubs and environmental assessment as project patrols to find out more about our local environment. (2) External provider sessions on creating frog bogs, native plants and water catchment model to learn more about local wildlife, environment and issue facing our local environment. Massive thankyou to SERCUL (SE Regional Centre for Urban Landcare) for their excellent presentations, support and guidance. (3) Writing grants, liasing with local council and community groups to facilitate materials (Bunnings, Cannington), native plants (City of Canning) and equipment (CRREPA: Canning River Residents Environment Protection Association) for: (4) environment and planting days, making bat and insect boxes. Thankyou to all our members and organisations who have supported this initiative.

Raised awareness of environmental issues with youth and family members in our scout group.  We undertook environmental assessment, planted >400 native plants, made bat and insect boxes, learnt more about our environment and endangered animals through environment days and themed evening sessions. This has had a positive impact for our scout members, other groups using the hall and local communities around the river (>400). We helped stabilise and improve the environment for wildlife along our river banks.  This has positively impacted users of the land bordering the Swan Canning Riverpark as well as our estuarine ecosystem.

(1) Taking positive environmental action were highlights of the scouting year for many of our cubs. (2) Through sustained year on year environmental action we can make real positive change in both marine and terrestrial environments, but also towards heathier lifestyles and communities (3) Working together with local councils and other community action groups has helped to build stronger communities and resulted in more effective environmental action.
