Empowering women in tech

After attending the impact innovator's training, Rover Megan Evans decided to address the imbalance of women in tech. Megan studied Computer Science and Software Engineering at University, Within her classes the proportion of women was below 10%. Her goal is to encourage more women to get into tech, and empower youth to learn how to use computers, knowing that using technology is an invaluable skill that they will need to navigate the working world.
The company where Megan works (Entelect) supports a local organization called 'GirlCode' by hosting 6 coding workshops each year where they teach women the basics of a coding framework and version control. This year Megan stepped up and taught React and Git. From next year she will be taking over the initiative and will be teaching Python and Git.
The main learning is to aim for less setup time, and more accessible tools- often we would spend a significant amount of time setting up IDEs, etc. on the girl’s laptops and wouldn’t have much time to learn the content. Next year, I aim to use an online tool where they can code without any setup, which also means that a laptop is not a pre-requisite.
