Creating a Better World Project
The founder of Scouting Lord Baden Powell believed and reiterated, " Ambition to do right is the only ambition that counts"where man only had one mission on this earth to help his fellowman where ever he can in every way we can ,a philosophy that aided his compass point in coining the mission of Scouting i.e to create a better world. In living up to that philosophy the 111 Amavulandlela Scout Group unrolled the first phase to their Creating a better World Project running under the motto,"Back to the land" in the month of November 2018.The initiative is an agricultural project that seeks to to help achieve three of the seventeen Sustainable Development Goals .The project aims to help end extreme poverty in all forms by 2030, end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture and ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages. In an effort to help the 111 Amavulandlela Scout Group kick start the first phase of their project which is centred on providing 25 families in need with maize corn that will make up for breakfast, samp for lunch and maize meal for supper., the Farm and City Company made a generous donation of maize seed which is already on the ground covering about 3 acres of farm land,to which a prosperous yield is expected as the rains continue to be favourable. In this first phase and year of the project 25 families to which some are child headed, others are headed by ( grand ) mothers with no means or little means to support their (grand) children ,it is the hope of the project facilitators that in the second year more families across the country and population spectrum benefit if resources permit. The second phase of the project which is expected to kick start in the month of March 2019 will be focused on poultry farming which will see the nutrional health improvement of the beneficiaries of the project and a comprehensive management system has already been put in place to secure the sustainability of all the project areas. With regard to phase two of the project Four properties have been secured with 20 year leases with the challenge of building material and the start up resources in the form of day old chicks and feed still outstanding. Over 40 volunteers from different areas of expertise have been secured ranging from Agriculture, education, Accounting, humanitarian and engineers to help make sure the project is a resounding success.
The first phase of the project is maize seed focused with much emphasis on urban farming techniques ,where urban agriculture, urban farming, or urban gardening is the practice of cultivating, processing and distributing food in or around urban areas.Urban agriculture can also involve animal husbandry, aquaculture, agroforestry, urban beekeeping, and horticulture.
Urban agriculture especially in Bulawayo where the project has been launched reflects varying levels of economic and social development. The Amavulandlela 111 Scout Group is igniting it to a social movement for sustainable communities, where organic growers, "foodies," and "locavores" will form social networks founded on shared ethos of nature and community holism. These networks will find themselves evolving when receiving formal institutional support, becoming integrated into local town planning as a "transition town" movement for sustainable urban development. For the Amavulandlela Scout Group end of hunger, food security, improved nutrition, and ensuring healthy lives and promoting well being for all are key motivations for the project which is urban agic based. The Creating a better World project is the first of its in Zimbabwe and is set to work as a basis for other Sourthen Zone Scout Groups and Companies.
In a launch of the project after the Sourthen Zone Rover Moot which took place in Gordon Park Matopos from the 6th to the 9th of December 2018, with participation of over 130 Rovers from Zimbabwe, South Africa , Zambia, Botswana, Kingdom of Eswatini and Namibia. The project director expressed much gratitude to the partnering Company Farm and City Centre which came to their rescue with the much needed maize seed to kick start the first phase of the project. Farm and City Centre is Zimbabwe 's leading agriculture and hardware retail Company, with products ranging from agro - inputs and implements, post harvest grain storage units, building materials, crop and general chemicals, stock feeds ,vetinary, general hardware and general tools.
