Conville Primary: Reading Brings Hope
The Scouting-in-Schools Team wanted to help learners at Conville Primary improve reading and life skills. Many children were shy or struggled with reading, and the team aimed to create a supportive environment. Motivated by the goal “to expand their reading and better their life skills,” the Yeboneers provided activities that encouraged curiosity, participation, and confidence in literacy.
Learners engaged in library-based and classroom activities: registering for library cards, visiting the library, finding information, reading and writing short stories, learning parts of speech, and using dictionaries. Yeboneers guided learners, supporting shy children and helping them practice reading aloud. One learner read confidently in class, showing that encouragement and practical activities helped learners gain skills and confidence.
The project showed that structured literacy activities can boost confidence and participation. Shy or struggling learners improved with guidance, while Yeboneers saw the importance of teacher support. Learners discovered how reading positively impacts life skills. Overall, encouragement, hands-on learning, and persistence helped both learners and Scouts grow.
