Community Service Projects - Ifo LA Scouts Association of Ogun State, Nigeria

Community Service Projects - Ifo LA Scouts Association of Ogun State More than 32 Cubs/Scouts and six Scouters from the Agbado\Adiyan area in Ifo LA of Ogun State, Nigeria have decided to make their community cleaner by engaging in a community Service Project monthly. We are aware that by doing this service projects together is one way that Cub Scouts could keep their promise "to help other people." While Scouts would do their best to help other people every day. This community service project is a bigger way to help people and make our community cleaner because we are part of the community. The streets need to be kept cleaner, this is a better way to give back to our community. While we are giving service, we are also learning to work together with others to do something that's good for our community. The exercise started more than two years ago in honor of the founder of Boy Scouts - Lord Baden Powell. In a bid to lead by example and to also give the inhabitant a cleaner home, the Scouts spent two hours each month cleaning up the dirt on the street, schools, community center, mosques and churches; the project is scheduled to be completed by end of Jan 2016 and that will make it a three years’ service to the community. Prior to the cleanup exercises we have visited most places in the community and realized that it really needed group of volunteers to come in and clear / clean the public places. The last exercise was monitored by the Nigerian National Headquarter Commissioner for Scouts in Diaspora / International Relation - Dr. Philip Soneye who was on holiday to Nigeria around the time of the last exercise, and luckily the exercise was carried out in his community. This initiative was started by the District Commissioner of Ifo LA Mr Olaotan Faruq Shitta and was package or redefined by Dr. Philip Soneye more than 2 years ago. The communities leaders welcomed the initiative and that has helped in increasing the number of scouts in the communities. Many thanks to the State Commissioner of Ogun State- Pastor Richard Babatunde and Chief Commissioner of Nigeria – Chief Olusoga Shofolahan (Olori Omo Oba) for their support and encouragements. Other Services we have done within the Ifo communities are :- Do a cleanup project. Plant and care for trees. Helping the natural world. Pick up litter around our neighborhood. Clean up trash by a stream. Plant seedlings or flowers. Helping the community Clean up a church, school and mosque parking lot. Creating Peace atmosphere within the community. 'I want the place where I live to be a proper community again. I want people to smile, say hello and get to know each other. Then I’d live in a community, rather than just another place…’ - Larraine Our next project for 2016 is taking peace to your doorstep Reported By Olalekan Philip Soneye
