COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT PROJECT
I am Anusha P.S ,a guide of Sunitha Williams guides.co of Sudana Residential School,Puttur , Karnataka.
The overall development of the personality of a child not only comes from the text book learning, but also from firsthand experience in society by community service.
Community development is a process in which community members come together to take collective work to solve simple problems of the society. The quality of community life will also depend on the awareness and eradication of the problems of the community.
Most of the problems of the community exists from a long time mainly because of the lack of awareness and collective effort from the community to eradicate it. It is our duty to create awareness about these problems in the community in which we live. Keeping this in mind we undertook community development projects. They are as follows:
A) PROMOTE GENDER EQUALITY AND EMPOWER WOMEN
The term ‘GENDER’ is applied to the social and cultural aspects of male and female roles. Sometimes, in our society preference or favour is extended to males against women , which is called gender bias.
One of the numerous problems being faced by women is harassment .Inspite of their progress in various fields like education, economics, politics and industry, there is violence inflicted upon women Encouraging women to take political, economical and social decisions like men is called women empowerment.
In this regard, we visited various places in and around Puttur town to carry out awareness about this among the people. We visited Yuvathi Mandala and Stree Shakthi and gathered information about their activities. Members of Yuvathi Mandala meet every second and fourth Sunday of every month and discuss about the activities. They also take part in cultural and sports events conducted by Yuvajana Kreeda Mandali. We also visited a beautician who takes class about beautician course to rural women as a RUDSET programme. Many of them have opened their own beauty parlour and have become capable of earning their living.
D) COMBAT HIV/ AIDS, MALARIA AND OTHER DISEASES
We visited Government Hospital and gathered information about the diseases such as malaria, Dengue, Malaria , Filaria, AIDS etc from Dr. Veena and we were also given information about rabies and precautionary measures to be taken if bitten by a rabied dog .We were also given information about symptoms and precautionary measures of diseases such as Malaria and AIDS. We visited many localities and houses around Puttur and distributed pamphlets to create awareness among people abouts sanitation and different diseases.
It was a wonderful experience to create awareness among people about women empowerment and the benefits of living in a disease-free society .
