Cleaning our sensitive estuary area. #litterless

We took up the 'Litter Less' campaign challenge. We were inspired by Scouts South Africa to take part in the Feb / March Litter Less campaign, and to take action in the immediate vicinity of our hall, as it is a sensitive habitat and estuary area.
Our cleanup took place in the Swartkops River valley, near our Scout Hall. We approached the Zwartkops Conservancy, who look after the river itself, to partner with us in providing proper refuse bags and some guidelines for our cleanup operation. We gathered at our hall and had a flag-break, then ventured out in 3 small groups to pick up any visible litter. We identified problem areas that may need further attention in future cleanups, and cleared as much as we could on the day.
We aim to show by leading with our example, that the areas surrounding the river can (and should) be kept free of litter and other man-made debris. We aim to reach out to the close-knit community thorugh our own social media platforms, as well as other community notice boards and forums, and encourage others to join us in our future claeanups. The immediate impact of our first Litter Less work, is the area around our hall is now visually more appealing and safer.
We would lie to involve the wider community in our next effort. We would like to involve more Scouts in the next one. We would like to obtain pickup 'tools' to speed up the process and make it easier for participants to pick up as much litter as possible, without any danger to themselves. We want to work on a system of public awareness, to get as much support and awareness around the need for a clean environment as possible.
