Pesanggrahan River at Lebak Lulus (South Jakarta, Indonesia) has been dirty and contaminated for a long time, fulfilled with plastic and garbage that become the cause of health hazard and flood during the rainy seasons. The condition of land along the riverbank gets worsened by people’s habit of dumping the garbage. This also becomes the cause of soil erosion. On the other hand, the surrounding communities are not aware of the advantages brought by clean river and green environment. They are also not aware of the disadvantages and negative effects on their lives caused by the polluted river. As a result, they keep throwing litters and waste away to the river. Through Scouts’ involvement & empowerment for the environmental sustainability, we are addressing the issues stated above by implementing this project: “Clean and Green River for a Better Future”. This is actually based on local philosophies like: “We reap what we sow” and “the future depends on what we plant today”. The core activity was basically divided into two steps: training and implementation. A series of training is held from the end of March until the end of April. Various trainings held are Trainers’ Training (30-31 March 2012), Training on Waste Management (5-6 April 2012), Training on Greening the Environment (15-16 April) and Training on Life Skills (29-30 April). From the first training, participants were given the background regarding the existing problem, including what actually the root of the problem is. It turns out that the dirty and contaminated river was mainly caused by people’s longtime habit of throwing their litters away to the river. Participants were also trained on how to manage garbage/waste so that it gives them material benefits. On the second training i.e. Training on Waste Management, participants were given the motivational training on: how to be the real Scouts and how to become potential, smart, energetic, responsive, innovative and adaptive young generation. They also perform sample practice on waste management During the “Training on Greening the Environment”, participants were taught the general overview regarding the importance of clean and green environment, including river. They also did the teamwork through Scout games. Last but not least, participants were introduced to the method of cooking Jakarta traditional foods, the technique of Ondel-ondel (Jakata traditional giant doll) making, fundamental skill of Martial Arts/traditional sportshome composter, etc while following “Training on Life Skills”. After following a series of trainings, participants implemented what they had learned from those training. First, they planted bamboo trees on the International Earth Day. The activity was held on 22 April 2012 and followed by 500 hundred participants. Participants came from various organizations such as KNPI, Karang Taruna, GP Ansor, PPKRI Bela Negara, Purna Paskibraka DKI Jakarta and DKD Gerakan Pramuka its-self. After celebrating the “Earth Day”, the activities moved to the branch of Pesanggrahan River for planting 1000 bamboo’ trees from the target of 5000 trees. The supports came from the goverment, Mandiri Bank etc. The chairman of DKI Jakarta Provincial Headquarter, Mr. Yudhi Suyoto, came for opening the event. Planting bamboo trees batch II was held on 16 June 2012. This event successfully gathered 2,500 scouts from 6 Jakarta regions: Central Jakarta, North Jakarta, West Jakarta, South Jakarta, East Jakarta, and Kepulauan Seribu. These event also attracted 500 non-scouts to join. They planted bamboo trees along the Pesanggrahan river bank. At the end, more than 1000 Bamboo trees were planted along the Pesanggrahan river bank A Scout Festival was also held near the Pesanggrahan River in form of Scouts Competition to practice life skills learned during “Training on Life skills”. There, Scouts exhibited their self-made paintings, handycrafts, etc. Scouts were proud and happy for being able to exhibit their self-made paintings and handcrafts.
