CCS Scouts Partners with local Barangay for UAP
As I was planning for my Urban Agricultural Project, I was approached by my friend, Sct. Nigel Lim, if I wanted to collaborate. Realizing my backyard cannot accommodate 4 trees, the idea to partner with my local barangay (smallest government division) was born. We would be giving back to the community and country, for the benefit of residents in the immediate area.
After securing approval from and coordinating schedules with the barangay, we set off to plant our saplings in the local park with the help of our dads and 2 barangay officials. Now the 2 avocado saplings I had previously sprouted in small pots using homemade compost will be given a permanent home.
The officials thanked us for having green thumbs, mentioning that it has been a while since the youth cared for the environment, they commended us for being so enthusiastic about planting. His statement gave me a bittersweet feeling. Even though people around the village may not notice much of a difference yet, they will be breathing cleaner air and in the future trees they can rest under, and fruits to enjoy. The trees would also help prevent erosion and encourage local wildlife to flourish.
During this activity, I learned the value of teamwork and friendship as doing it myself would be pretty lonely, and having a companion helping me made it more exciting. The power of partnership for making a bigger impact when working with your local community. And most importantly, fulfilling our roles as stewards of the earth as stated in Genesis 2:15 “The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.”
