I understood how poor young engagement in my community is, in the fields of volunteering, advocacy, political action, sustainability. Thanks to the pandemic, tons of young people lost their references and motivations, the sense of community. Cases of bullying and indiscipline inside schools increased in the past years. after analysing the opportunities that there were and the personal gifts and talents, I could work with, I got inspired to take action.
I created a workshop on basic literacy in Human Rights and Peace Education that was held in my former high school to +250 students from 15-18 years old. The aim was to, with non-formal education tools, motivate them to become active citizens and peace builders in their everyday lifes.
The change I did was building motivation and empower these teenagers to be active citizens here where we live and how necessary this topic is specially nowadays through the topics I approached and leading by example. These workshops sometimes ended with “Leonor, I’m going to look for opportunities to volunteer, to make a change” “I will work more in myself so that I can be more active and engaging” and it felt like a seed that was planted, and that, in my opinion is change starting to happen.
- How hard it is to build a project by myself and how much time it takes;
- How capable I am for standing and taughing about what I believe in;
- Risking and going for it;
- How important and empowering non-formal education is;
I would get a partner to help me and do smaller sessions.
