Azerbaijan delegation at 23rd World Scout Jamboree
The World Scout Jamboree (WSJ) is the largest event organized by the Scout Movement, gathering up to 40 000 people from all over the world. It is the non-formal educational event for young people, to promote peace and understanding through a wide variety of activities, and interaction on the campsite. Every four years, a different country hosts the World Scout Jamboree. The first WSJ was held in England in 1920, and the most recent WSJ was hosted by Sweden in 2011. While the WSJ is open to Scouts between 14-17 years old, those aged 18 or older are eligible to participate as members of the International Service Team.
This year, the 23rd World Scout Jamboree has started at held at Kirara-hama, Yamaguchi, Japan on 28 July and will go on until 8 August, 2015. More than 35 000 scouts from 150 countries took part at this magnificent event.
Association of Scouts of Azerbaijan (ASA) is presented by 26 scouts. First group of Azerbaijan delegation left for Jamboree from Baku on July 25, 2015. All other groups joined them at Jamboree site on July 28, 2015.
Our scouts started preparations for Jamboree a long time ago. All scouts have experience of participation at international and national event. It’s huge responsibility to introduce our Motherland so far away and among so many different nations and cultures. And we all are trying to do our best. From the first day we have here, in Azerbaijan pavilion a lots of material on history, culture, current situations and achievements of Azerbaijan. Appropriate catalogs, brochures and other printing materials are available.
We’ve got several presentations on Azerbaijan’s culture, cuisine, nature as well. So it’ll be great chance to introduce our country to other participants in general. Every detail, starting from our uniform and behavior up to treatment with each other, hosting at our pavilion and presenting food stuff at “Azerbaijan cuisine” stand is extremely important, since it creates common view and impression about Azerbaijan for other people, some of which heard about our country for the first time. During National Day we’re planning to present Azerbaijan national dances. For this activity we brought azerbaijan national costumes and recorded national music as well.
The Contingent Badge of the Azerbaijan Contingent for the 23rd World Scout Jamboree is something which we’d like to underline.
Explanation of it is a bird in the middle is "Simurq" - mythical bird, similar to Phoenix. Fire symbolizes Azerbaijan - "Land of Fire". The shape at the background is the top part of the symbol of Baku - "Maiden's Tower" - ancient architectural sight with lots of legends, stories and mysteries. Special thanks for design of this badge to Xaqani Mammadov, our adult scout from Shamkir \ Azerbaijan.
I’d like to stress on special atmosphere which we could feel from the first day of arrival. It’s real feeling of Unity. It’s not just a word. Here, where you have a chance to communicate with people from 150 countries, learn and teach at the same time, get priceless experience of humanity, friendship and cooperation – then we realize all meaning of being scout.
Till now the greatest impression we’ve got was trip to Hiroshima. This tragedy even 70 years later teach us how to stay a human for the rest of your life. As many people and countries, my Motherland knows well what war is. Looking at people here I became more confident that Peaceful World is something what we can and must fight for. Fight in a peaceful way. There is something, which even children can do for that.
In the memory of all victims of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, for all victims of Hojali /
Srebrenica / Ruanda and all others we will put our efforts together for better World.
