Timor-Leste is a new, but very poor nation. It is Australia's second nearest neighbour, only 1.25 hours flight time from Darwin. Donations have been sought and received from Scout groups and individuals in Canberra to assist the disadvantaged youth of this impoverished nation. Many families live on $2 per day. School supplies such as satchels, pens, pencils, exercise books, T-shirts, hats and other clothing for children, hand knitted baby clothes, and sporting equipment were donated or sourced in Canberra. Boxes of 20-25 kgs of gifts are transported with volunteers as excess luggage when travelling to Dili. The airlines have generous provided excess luggage for these volunteers free of charge. The items are distributed to Scouting families by Uniao Nacional Dos Escuteiros De Timor Leste,, the Scout Association of Timor-Leste. Women and children have also been assisted through the Alola Foundation, founded by Mrs Kirsty Sword Gusmao, the wife of the Prime Minister of Timor-Leste.
