Arrowe Park greenhouse maintenance
Arrowe Park is a Scout camping facility on the banks of a lake in Benoni, South Africa. As the first generation of exotic trees planted in the 1950s nears the end of their life, we are replacing them with indigenous trees better suited to the local environment
With funding from the Scout Donation Platform, the original structure was built and stocked with seedlings, cuttings and nursery stock in 2023. Over time, the greenhouse sheeting degraded and needed to be replaced. Additionally, the plants needed to be weeded and repotted to allow optimal growth. Rovers from Terra Rover Crew and Phoenix Rover Crew spent the day working through all of the pots and replacing the exterior sheeting.
The greenhouse continues to allow donated and purchased trees to grow. Recently, the first donated trees were planted out - 3 for Africa Scout Day and a further 10 to provide a screening hedge along one edge of the campsite
