Alpine Primary building readers for life
The Scouting-in-Schools team at Alpine Primary wanted to improve learners’ reading and writing abilities while fostering creativity. Heybre Hunter explained that the project provided an engaging way to encourage literacy and critical thinking. By making reading interactive and enjoyable, learners could explore their imagination, develop comprehension skills, and gain confidence in expressing their ideas.
Learners participated in reading and writing short stories, exploring dictionaries, learning parts of speech, and understanding book classification. Yeboneers guided learners through each activity, helping them complete tasks, develop comprehension, and apply literacy skills practically. The structured support encouraged engagement, creativity, and active participation throughout the adventure.
Heybre Hunter noted that completing the literacy adventure was challenging but rewarding. Learners gained confidence, understood how books are classified, and improved their reading and writing skills. The project demonstrated that structured support, guidance, and creative activities can make literacy enjoyable and accessible, helping learners develop essential lifelong skills.
