ADOPT RIVER MBAGATHI:PLASTIC TIDETURNERS CHALLENGE

Global production of plastics has caused disposal of plastic litter in the marine and physical environment. River Mbagathi is one of the rivers highly affected with a lot of plastic waste disposed into it. I was inspired to take up this project to help the youth and my community understand the impact that humans have in the world when it comes to plastic use and consumption and how they can promote a clean, healthy planet that will contribute to a more sustainable world.
I will do it in 3 phases The first phase include training both scouts and non scouts( community volunteers and area residents) the importance of maintaining the water sources clean as well as the different types of plastics. We will also train on recycling and innovation to make plastic collection income generating. We have already done an industrial visit where the 5 scouts were trained. The second Phase will be 2 monthly cleanups for 4 months. The third Phase is an Impact assessment
50+ house holds that live near the river will benefit from it because the water will be safe for domestic use and irrigation. The water will be safe for wild animals in Nairobi National Park Rehabilitation of the river will promote action by individuals in the community to facilitate change. ZERO PLASTIC POLLUTION
Its not easy to facilitate behavioral change and mostly on single use plastic disposal but it takes the effort of many to make a success out of a project.
