2SW Cubs and Meerkats clean their beach!

We planned to do a beach clean-up after spring tide so that much of the debris would be washed high up onto the beach to make it safer, and more efficient for our Meerkats and Cubs to pick up litter and microplastics.
We suspect that an EPWP team had cleaned the beach of the bulk earlier in the day, as there was little bulk litter. So we focused on the microplastics. A total of 4 big bin bags of mostly of microplastics, bottle caps, bottle cap rings, straws, earbuds, cigarette butts and glass were collected.
The Meerkats and Cubs learned what microplastics are, we discussed what plastic does to our seas and oceans and the wildlife and vegetation that rely on a clean habitat to thrive. The children were keen to clean up the beach and were taken aback by the amount of small plastic litter as the bulk had been cleared - we assume.
