2nd Somerset West Cubs Seniors Camp 2023
2nd Somerset West Senior Cubs camp anually at Hawequas Scout Camp Site. It is commmon practice to do an act of service to contribute to the maintenance of the site. There are big areas of black Wattle on the property especially along the riverbanks. They absorb large quantities of precious water and prevent the natural vegetation from growing. We decided that pulling out balck wattle seedlings was something that we could do.
We hiked one of the routes up to the bridge and identified many black wattle seedlings. We reached our destination, had lunch and headed back after the Cubs were given instruction on what a Black Wattle seedling looks like and the danger to the ecosystem that they present. Everyone was tasked with pulling out at least 5 seedlings.
The Cubs learnt about how alien vegetation uses more water that the local species and that they prevent the natural species from flourishing by overcrowding (they are prolific) and absorbing lots of water from the rivers. They also realised that evryone removed counts and that they are empowered to remove them under supervision..
