2ASM - Making ecobricks in Diepsloot
In partnership with Morningside Rotary club, attendees of the Second Africa Scout Moot spent a morning building and weighing ecobricks at a school in Diepsloot. Attendees of the Caving and Hiking off-site activities had a chance to contribute to this project while en route to their overnight stays, spreading the impact of the Moot more broadly across the province
Eco-bricks are a sustainable way to re-use low value plastic waste, by filling a 2l soft drink bottle with soft plastics until it meets a target weight. These can then be used to build structures such as the rooms at the school visited for this project. Participants were responsible for both filling and checking the weight of donated ecobricks. They also learned about how the ecobricks are used to build classrooms and other structures
This project exposed participants to an accessible method of recycling. It also helped the local Scout group identify a partnership opportunity, and on the second day of work volunteers from the local group were able to participate and will be establishing a partnership with the centre going forward
