1st Tableview Scouts does Blaauberg Beach Cleanup

An over-capacity storm water infrastucture means that heavy rains often result in trash ending up along the shores of Blauuwberg beach. 1st Tableview Scout Group wanted to do its part in maintaining this beautiful coastline. So, on the 16 February 2023 in response to the Litterless Badge Challenge we got together to do our bit in tackling the litter problem. Inspite of strong winds we managed to keep our refuse bags topped up, leaving the beach less polluted than when we arrrived.

Our Scout Troop is based in Tableview which is about 4km from the Blaauberg Beach, a popular tourist and water sport enthusiast destination. As a troop,1st Tableview wanted to begin making its mark in reversing the impact of this ongoing pollution challenge faced by the locals. Scouts, Cubs, Meerkats, friends and parents met at Eden on the Bay. Armed with refuse bags and surgical gloves, we got into teams of 2 and swept the coastline collecting trash.

Because of its popularity with tourists and sport enthusiasts as well as the many locals that frequest these coastlines we estimate that approximatley 180 000 people will have benefitted from our efforts

We learnt that there is no point in waiting on someone else to do something. That since, the ocean and the beaches belong to us too, we simply have to get in there and get our hands dirty. Because the Litterless Badge Challenge forms part of this year's National Scout Challenge -Champions for Nature we plan on making regular cleanup visits to maintain about 2km of the Blaauwberg coastline.
