1st Hermanus Sea Scouts Litter Less Campaign

The 1st Hermanus Sea Scouts were challenged to clean up their community through the Litter-Less campaign. We teamed up with the Hawston Kadets (TS Birkenhead) and worked together to identify a littered area in the community and made a plan to clean it up together. The verge formed a border between the local highway and the residential homes of Hawston, and was rather polluted with litter. This made it an eyesore to both the community and to the traffic of visitors to our holiday town.
Together, the Scout and Kadet leaders coordinated the acquisition of gloves, black bags, and set a meeting time for Friday 24 March 2023 at the local community hall. The troops then spent over an hour working together to clean up the messy verge. The troops worked together to sweep through the verge in one direction and then swept back again to pick up litter missed on their first attempt.
There are possibly 25 or more people living in the residential properties alongside the verge who can now look out onto a cleaner area. Because the verge also borders on the main highway that runs into our town, it was an eyesore, so cleaning it up helps to give a more welcoming impression to visitors coming to our town. In addition, because the clean up was so visible to passing traffic and pedestrians, we hope that seeing the youth busy cleaning up will inspire others to do the same.
It was a good experience for the Scouts to realise they are not the only community-focused group for youth, and many Scouts spotted peers from school in the Kadets group. We hope that this will encourage Scouts and Kadets to join forces more often with like-minded peers. The Scouts also realised how yucky it is to pick up other people’s litter, and we hope that it will encourage us all to be more careful about how we deal with our own litter.
