15th World Scout Moot - Change
"Change" is the theme of the 15th World Scout Moot which took place last 25 July to 02 August 2017 in Iceland. The theme is also appropriate for the message that it want to impart to its participants - to be the change agents who will make the world a better place.
I am fortunate to attend the Moot under the auspices of the Operation Aurora together with other Scouts from the Asia-Pacific Region. During the Moot, I joined 5,000 other Scouts from more than 90 countries around the world in celebrating the positive change that we will all champion.
I was at the Reykjavik Expedition Centre and devoted 3 days not only to explore the beauty of the Capital City but also to learn the culture of the Icelandic people. We took part in a Community Service Project where we laid down pathways in their community forest. This experience is very fulfilling as we, at least, leave a little contribution in the preservation and maintenance of the vast forest area of the City which is indeed a sanctuary where people and nature interact. The community service project highlighted Scouts' responsibility of contributing to environmental protection and conservation in order to pass on a better world to the next generation. We spent the rest of our Expedition biking around the City, meeting the natives, enjoying the public pools, capped by a flashmob on the street and pool party.
The spirit in the main campsite is even more alive. The Program Villages - Eagle, Bull, Dragon and Giant - further gave us a taste of Icelandic culture, tradition and even geography. The natural beauty of the environment and its people indeed makes Iceland a unique country with a rich history. With the almost day-long sunshine and the unending company of good friends, it feels like I've found another home away from the Philippines.
One of the memorable experiences that I will treasure from the Moot is the opportunity to listen to WSC Chairperson João Armando Gonçalves at the Better World Tent where he shared the challenges that the Scouting Movement is facing as it gear towards the attainment of its mission and purpose. On a personal note, I concur with the WSC Chairperson that the following are indeed pressing issues that we need to address even at the national and local levels:
1. VOLUNTEERS. We need to invest to get more volunteers who have the HEART and COMMITMENT to serve our young people. The Scout Movement is expanding and we need more volunteers to cater our young people and facilitate learning.
2. IMAGE. We need to build on our image of being partners in community development and nation building. It is only when we get engaged and immersed with our communities that we fulfill our duty to others and eventually solicit additional support to the Movement.
3. RESOURCES. Most of us believe that this is the greatest challenge but with appropriate networking and linkages especially with the help of our volunteers, supported by some good image, resources will come in no matter how big and small.
While the Moot gave me a wonderful experience of a diverse yet interrelated Program, it also gave me insights which I can use to improve the administration and management of the Scouting Program to the units that I handle. Going back to the Philippines, I will be bringing a positive "change".
