TURNING THE TIDE IN KIZIMKAZI

In Kizimkazi, Zanzibar, over 350 Scouts gathered for a powerful one-day environmental event as part of the Plastic Tide Turners Project, funded by the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM). The focus was to tackle plastic pollution and raise community awareness about protecting the environment. The day began with an intensive beach clean-up, resulting in the collection of nearly 10 tons of waste, including 4.5 tons of plastic materials. This effort significantly restored the coastline and highlighted the pressing issue of marine pollution. Following the clean-up, Scouts conducted community outreach in schools, markets, and public areas. Using simple messages, creative performances, and open dialogue, they educated residents on how plastic waste affects health, the ocean, and daily life, while offering practical solutions. The day concluded with a community awareness event featuring songs, skits, and educational talks. The event brought together local leaders, parents, and young people, all united by a shared commitment to environmental care. The Kizimkazi activity stood as a clear example of youth-led action making a real difference. Through the Plastic Tide Turners Project, Scouts are becoming powerful agents of change turning the tide toward a cleaner and more sustainable future.
