TIDE TURNERS PLASTIC CHALLENGE - THE GAMBIA

ENDING PLASTIC POLLUTION IN THE GAMBIA THROUGH TIDE TURNERS PLASTIC CHALLENGE

Plastic Pollution and environmental safety are alarming critical issues in The Gambia nowadays. Rapid economic growth, urbanization and increasing population have caused resource consumption to increase, and consequently the release of large amounts of Single use plastic to the environment. To address this problem sustainably in the future, ending Plastic Pollution requires a more systems-oriented approach that will address the root causes for the Plastic pollution.

The rate of indiscriminate dumping of single use Plastic in the world today, both public and private places seems to be stretching out of control. Hence the need for timely intervention by authorities is needed before we would pay the price for what experts called "Environmental pollution" and its impact on both human and marine lives. Recently, dramatic improvements in the Fight against plastic pollution in developing nations are made possible through new strategies such as the Tide Turners Plastic Challenge Badges.

The Tide Turners Plastic Challenge is a global initiative developed by UNEP, adopted by the World Scout Organization as an integral component of its Earth Tribe Initiative. The Challenge will help young people to understand the impact that humans have in the world when it comes to plastic use and consumption and how you can promote a clean, healthy planet that will contribute to a more sustainable world. The Tide Turners Plastic Challenge supports the development of a specific set of competencies in young people to adopt responsible behaviour towards the environment in the area of a “Healthy planet.” This set of competencies is complementary to many others that Scouting recognises through the Earth Tribe Programme and aligned with Education for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
So, by taking up the Tide Turners Plastic Challenge, young people develop their knowledge, skills, and attitudes essential for supporting the Sustainable Development Goals.
