SCOUTING STORMS UNILAG FOR THE 2016 INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE

The United Nations International Day of Peace, September 21, provides an opportunity for all humanity to come together, in spirit and in action, to forward the ideals of and conditions for peace. Peace Day provides a globally shared date for all humanity to commit to Peace above all differences and to contribute to building a Culture of Peace. The International Day of Peace, also known as Peace Day, was brought into being by unanimous United Nations Resolutions in 1981 (36/37) and 2001. The General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to “commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace both within and among all nations and peoples.” This global day is observed by hundreds of millions of citizens in cities, towns and villages worldwide, and thousands of NGOs, as well as citizens and governments, organize and engage in diverse peace-related activities on and around this global day. The Day’s theme for 2016 is “The Sustainable Development Goals: Building Blocks for Peace.” For World Scouting, the subject of peace and peace education has been a constant interest since the inception of the Movement. Our founder, Baden-Powell, had instilled this mindset from the start, inviting Scouts to engage in a “global network of service”, to unite all efforts regardless of nationalities, religion, ethnicities or age, envisioning all Scouts to collaborate to help others and create positive change in the community and the world. As part of activities to mark the International Day of Peace, Mr. Kenneth Okonkwo decides to break a record of being the first to storm the prestigious University of Lagos State (Unilag) with a scouting programme. Consulting with the National Headquarters Commissioner, Messengers of Peace Programme, The Scout Association of Nigeria, Mr. Solomon Etim, He dragged the leadership of Scouting in Nigeria to the University for a workshop on peace building which was held at the Faculty of Business Administration Room 8, University of Lagos State. The school community and student in general welcomed this gesture with a massive turn out, NGO’s and Youth groups registered their presence with talks and lectures on peace building. Notable amongst them is the Presence of the Chief Commissioner, The Scout Association of Nigeria, Deputy Secretary General of the 2016 University of Lagos United Nations First Model, lecturers, etc.
