Reimagining Scouting Through Digital Innovation
From September 20 to 22, 2024, I had the incredible opportunity to serve as the Course Director for the 3rd Digital Scouting Course held at Mashonaland Scout Headquarters, Harare. This wasn’t just another scout camp it was a mission to merge traditional scouting values with essential 21st-century digital skills.
As a passionate youth leader and digital skills advocate, I’ve always believed that Scouts shouldn’t be left behind in the fast-moving digital world. That belief inspired me to take the lead in designing and executing a unique learning experience that could empower our scouts with practical digital knowledge while still keeping the spirit of scouting alive.
We welcomed over 35 scouts aged 13 to 18, each eager to learn, explore, and grow. My team and I developed a dynamic 3-day program covering topics like digital literacy, online safety, graphic design with Canva, and even basic coding. These sessions were balanced with team-building games, traditional patrol competitions, and the warmth of a campfire under the stars.
The highlight for many scouts was the Digital Skills Challenge, where teams created posters and pitched digital ideas showcasing not only creativity but leadership, confidence, and teamwork. Seeing scouts who had never used design tools before create something amazing in just hours was a proud moment for me.
Executing the project wasn’t without challenges. From managing logistics to ensuring internet stability, I learned quickly that flexibility and teamwork were just as important as preparation. Daily debriefs, constant communication, and support from fellow leaders made all the difference.
At the end of the camp, the feedback was humbling. Scouts shared how the course opened their eyes to new career paths, boosted their confidence, and made learning fun. For me, the most powerful lesson was this: when we combine innovation with the values of scouting, we equip our young people not just for today but for the future.
This experience strengthened my leadership, expanded my vision, and reminded me why I serve. The Digital Scouting Course wasn’t just a project it was a step toward building future-ready scouts.
